| Drug addiction is a very scary reality that some families have to face. If your family is facing the reality that someone is addicted to drugs it is important that you show support but also deal with your feelings and issues.
If someone that you love has become addicted to drugs and are not yet seeking treatment it is very important that your family bands together to help them deal with their addiction. Many times, an addict is not aware that they are an addict because they have always found ways to justify their addictive behavior. When speaking with an addict, it is important to understand that they will feel attacked and ganged-up on. You want to approach them with love and not anger. You will also want to be able to give examples of how their addiction is hurting everyone in the family so they can start to see things through your eyes. If the person that you love who is addicted to drugs has already entered rehab then it is time to finally deal with your feelings and emotions. Many family members spend so much time worrying about their family member who is addicted they stop thinking about themselves. After their loved one is safely in rehab and healing, they begin to feel overwhelmed by their emotions. When someone is addicted to drugs they usually behave differently, sometimes irrationally, and can let down and disappoint they family. Many family members feel hurt and angry at the person who is addicted. In many cases, trust has been broken within the family. It is important that you start to work through these issues to be able to put the past behind you and move forward. |
